Anyone regularly playing computer games in the ’90s was seen as a tech geek or gaming nerd. Fast forward to the 21st century, and you will find exactly such a group at the helm of the award-winning casino game developer Play’n GO.

While starting in the mid-’90s as a contractor to the era’s big software companies, they decided to go it alone. In 2005 they took on the challenge to become one of the most sought after online slot suppliers in iGaming.

The result is a portfolio exceeding 200 slots, bingo and table games developed by a meanwhile 350-strong workforce in five locations spread across the globe, geeks and nerds still included.

Such has been their success that it is hard to imagine what an online casino lobby would look like without their online slots. They include all-time favourites such as Rich Wild and the Book of Dead, Gemix and Reactoonz.

Their portfolio also spans from a back-end casino platform to their OMNY system that allows games to be seamlessly available across multiple mediums and devices.

Play’n GO Very First Slots

The first true Play’n GO slot is considered to have been the Western-themed Gunslinger developed in 2008. There is no clear record whether any creations appeared earlier in online casino lobbies.

Later on, the Växjö, Sweden-headquartered studio raised for the first time the eyebrows in the player community with the first true grid slot called Troll Hunters.

The mechanic replaced spinning reels and instead dropped symbols onto a 5×5 grid where winning clusters would be removed to let new symbols fall into place and possibly start a chain of wins within a single spin.

After releasing dozens of such games, Play’n GO has been considered the industry’s benchmark for grid slots. Energoonz, Golden Ticket and Gemix followed within a year.

Their signature grid format established them as a top-tier developer, which was further cemented with the Rich Wilde franchise’s launch.

While the first release Rich Wilde and the Aztec Idols was well-received, the game that propelled them to stardom in the casino community was the 2015-created Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead.

The franchise has grown substantially and includes today Wilde’s intrepid daughter Cat who in 2020 set out on her first solo slot mission in Cat Wilde and the Doom of Dead.

Best Play’n GO Slots: Book of Dead

In 2015, Play’n GO thought it would be a good idea to take inspiration from Novomatic’s Book of Ra slot and released Book of Dead. Little did they know that it will become one of the most played slots across all online casinos right now.

While the base game has little to excite on its 5×3 reels set with 10 pay lines, the free spins round packs quite a punch with wins of up to 5,000x your bet.

Three or more scatters will trigger 10 free spins which can be indefinitely retriggered. One of the regular pay symbols is randomly selected as the special expanding symbol for the round.

Whenever sufficient land (2 for the top symbols and 3 for all other symbols) anywhere on the reels, they will expand and pay each pay line’s corresponding win.

For example, having “A” as a special symbol will see it expand when three of these land to pay 10 times the win for a three-of-a-kind “A” s once for each pay line. A full screen of the top symbols will award the maximum win.
